How the conversion works

Both dates are turned into a Julian Day Number — a plain count of days that never skips — and then re-read on the other calendar. That is why the arithmetic still works across the reform and back into BC years.

The Julian calendar adds a leap day every four years without exception, overshooting the solar year by about 11 minutes. The gap grows by one day roughly every 128 years: 10 days in 1582, 11 after 1700, 12 after 1800, 13 after 1900 — and 10 days for your date.

In October 1582 Pope Gregory XIII deleted 5–14 October, so Thursday 4 October was followed by Friday 15 October. Britain and its colonies waited until 1752, Russia until 1918, Greece until 1923 — which is why old birth records from those places are Julian dates that everyone now misreads as Gregorian ones.
